Greenplum EDC: Let Them Sandbox

I just listened to this webinar from Greenplum.  It basically describes their EDC platform (Enterprise Data Cloud) and how it enables self service bi running on commodity hardware.  One central theme is getting data into the hands of business users as fast as possible by giving them their own space and resources to prototype data.  I’m heartened to hear thought leaders in data warehousing like Mark Dunlap of Evergreen Technologies promoting the idea of fork lifting data from source systems and deploying atypical approaches to developing BI. Departmental BI as a Platform for EDW Integration

Workgroup or departmental business intelligence solutions are gaining traction in the market. Many business units are taking control of their BI destiny by building custom reporting systems, often consolidating data from multiple source systems including the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW). This is further evidenced by the success of QlikTech’s QlikView product which has gained the most notoriety in this space and new entrants including Microsoft’s Gemini and LyzaSoft’s Lyza. Even traditional vendors are starting to make a play for this segment of the market, most notably MicroStrategy. Gartner believes “that despite the inherent risk in silo perpetuation, workgroup BI’s light-touch nature will prove attractive in a recession.” Read more…
