I just listened to this webinar from Greenplum. It basically describes their EDC platform (Enterprise Data Cloud) and how it enables self service bi running on commodity hardware. One central theme is getting data into the hands of business users as fast as possible by giving them their own space and resources to prototype data. I’m heartened to hear thought leaders in data warehousing like Mark Dunlap of Evergreen Technologies promoting the idea of fork lifting data from source systems and deploying atypical approaches to developing BI. Information Week article describing Gartners presentation on “BI”g Discrepancy. Many of the points they discuss are along the lines of my previous post, especially their points on “personal data sandboxes” and “data discovery environments.”

Workgroup or departmental business intelligence solutions are gaining traction in the market. Many business units are taking control of their BI destiny by building custom reporting systems, often consolidating data from multiple source systems including the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW). This is further evidenced by the success of QlikTech’s QlikView product which has gained the most notoriety in this space and new entrants including Microsoft’s Gemini and LyzaSoft’s Lyza. Even traditional vendors are starting to make a play for this segment of the market, most notably MicroStrategy. Gartner believes “that despite the inherent risk in silo perpetuation, workgroup BI’s light-touch nature will prove attractive in a recession.” Read more…

Interesting how there been a 35% increase in MicroStrategy related jobs since Jan 08 through 2009. The sharpest growth seem to have happened after the market crashed. I’m not sure how reliable this data is because it seems quite contrary to what you would assume and it doesn’t align with what I have observed.

I went to QlikView (QV) training last week and I am sure some people might be wondering how it stacks up against MicroStrategy just as I was curious. Well, for starters I should say I am impressed with its presentation layer (a.k.a the reporting layer). Its very sleek and crisp and the whole graph building and design is much easier and very intuitive as compared to MicroStrategy (MSTR). Read more…

With over 10,000 customers this Swedish firm is quickly making its way up the Gartner Magic Quadrant. By plying the underserved departmental niche they are capturing the hearts and minds of business users. QlikTech received the highest score when asked weather the vendor is viewed as being successful in the organization. Traditional vendors like MicroStrategy should be concerned with the passion QlikView customers have shown. Passionate customers evangelize to their peers and soon you may end up seeing an excel like effect. Read more…

A friend sent this video to me several months ago before SAP purchased BO. If you didnt see it already its too late, you missed a clever rendition of Sir Mix A Lot’s “Baby Got Back”. I guess the lighthearted references to big butts didnt sit well with SAP’s executive management. IMHO, this was a short-sighted move. Baby Got BI had all the trappings of a viral marketing video and was on the verge of mass saturation. In fact, it was my colleague at MicroStrategy who forwarded this to me. When you got competitors watching a fun video sort of praising your product, its a good thing.
The real question is: Where is the MicroStrategy response video? lol
